The story for Gwangi was imaginative but not well planned out(a little too King Kongish). The romance story was pretty dull.. A little cruel by today's standards(especially after JP: the Lost World). Nevertheless it was a good idea and had some great fx sequences. Stop motion animation is not widely appreciated...but wizards like Harryhausen and Danforth made imaginative films years before Lucas and Spielberg hired others to create the magic for them. If Harryhausen had made Jurassic Park we still may have had to endure a weak story(although i doubt the writing could be worse than what Crichton turned out!) but RH would have milked the entertainment value for all it was worth! He knew how to put on a show using the old, under appreciated technique of stop motion photography.
