How to Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (2005)
*** (out of 4)
Insightful and well detailed documentary about maverick filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles that chronicles his life from his days in France working for a magazine up to his breakthrough film Sweet Sweetback's Baadaasss Song. Van Peebles has been a part of many documentaries but this one here goes into further details about his career outside of just making movies. Interviews with his family as well as Spike Lee and of course the man himself. The most interesting aspect comes when Lee, Mario Van Peebles and Melvin discuss the blaxploitation peroid that followed Sweetback and it was rather surprising to hear the men put down the genre.
