Excellent British police series set in the North of England during the 1960s:

This is yet another excellent British police series that, in quality, ranks alongside such better-known series as "Inspector Morse", "Inspector Lewis" and "Endeavour". In this case, the setting is the 1960s and the venue is the North of England, principally around Newcastle.

This series somewhat refreshingly turns the usual American police series premise on it's head in that the appropriately-named George Gently, a middle-aged, veteran detective, exhibits the traits of patience and empathy, while his young protege, Detective-Sergeant Bacchus, is the one who is usually hard-nosed and intolerant towards the general public.

There are a far greater variety of regional accents to be found in Britain than there are in the much larger United States, and most of the characters in this series speak in a very decided "Geordie" dialect. Those accustomed to hearing the more usual London-style British of accent will find the language in this series quite different. Nevertheless, as an American, l experienced no difficulty understanding what was being said.

The characters are engaging and the cases are both interesting and very much of their time. The entire production is up to the usual meticulous standards found in the best British television. What more would one ask>
