So let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first: we all know why this TV show was made, why it was green-lit, and what kind of discussions went into the making of it in all the meetings required to bring it to fruition. It's clear the politics came first, and they eclipse the story at every turn, which terminally weakens any enjoyment a body could hope to get from it.
The Good Lord Bird claims to be a true story, but of course practically none of it is: beyond the existence of a historical personage called John Brown, and I presume a few others, everything is anachronistic fantasy driven by performative self-flagellation.
