Lee I occasionally do trade shows there and we always go for an apartment right in the city centre next to the sea front.
Watch out on evenings in Las Ramblas late at night - leave your passport in your hotel/room. You won't believe how many Brits get 'swarmed' by gangs at the end of the night. The British Consul does a roaring trade in replacements I believe.... Just got back from Barcelona following a 3 night stay at the Grand Central Hotel in the gothic quarter. Perfect location for everything and could highly recommend both hotel and area. We got back last thursday , 3 night stay and you're right, it does change late at night as to who's about but there were a lot of police about all around the city, especially in the tourist areas, but we didn't experience any problems at all, well, apart from leaving a bag in a restaurant about 10:30pm
I walked back alone to get it, on the way there I got offered a BJ and on the way back sex but I suspect both came with a free mugging
The Vincci Gala is recommended , really nice and very close, 2 minute walk to las ramblas There are some terrific hotels in Barcelona as many have discovered. Some very characterful places, some stunning glitzy places and the city seems well served with "boutique" hotels.
But many people choose to take an apartment. I have noticed that most don't get very good reviews. After a good bit of research I discovered a building that at the time I was involved got 4.8 out of 5 on Tripadvisor and had an absolutely perfect position. Was pretty good value too. I stayed there and can vouch for it.

I'm talking specifically, for a great location, about their Catedral site

It's almost literally round the corner from the big square in front of the gothic cathedral, yet also just off a shopping street, Avinguda del Portal l'Angel that leads very quickly up to the important Placa de Catalunya ( airport bus, tour buses, metro, taxis, tourist office ).Looking at the map, you've got La Ramblas coming south off the left hand side of the square Place de Catalunya, and the relevant street is simply what comes off the opposite, right side of the square. Dead easy. Although on a little side street, Duran i Bas, its dead easy to find - just walk south from Placa de Catalunya ( left side as you look south ), down Avinguda del Portal l'Angel and turn left opposite the Disney Store and its a few doors along Duran i Bas.
The style is clean and modern rather than foosty-old, as can be in some other places it seems. Everything works. I might not choose the decor and cabinetry for my own place to live but it suits for a holiday let. Nice and simple, clean and functional with good quality too. Good security. Lift. Roof top small pool if you can be bothered. Office to leave your luggage in on departure day.
I'd say the Cathedral Bas Apartments deserve their rating. The location is absolutely perfect, yet quiet where the building is. We had a great time at the Doubletree Alexandria back in April, good location so most of the time we walked everywhere. When we wanted to go a bit further afield such as the Nou Camp, taxis seemed pretty cheap, although I appreciate the exchange rate is a little different now!
A good tip for the city attractions is to do online bookings from the comfort of your hotel room. Most of the major attractions use PDF tickets that allow you to skip the queues and usually end up a fair amount cheaper.
