European holiday destinations?
The wife and I are planning a week or so somewhere in Europe this summer. We were thinking of Copenhagen but I've read it's very easy to do everything there is to do very quickly.Where else should we be considering? We're after culture and nice food rather than sitting on a beach or by a pool. And we're not good in the heat, so southern Europe's out. Only other no-no is Germany, as she's been there quite a few times.
Still like the idea of Copenhagen, though wonder whether there would be any language barrier issues. I know it's meant to be expensive but that's just the way it is.
Doesn't have to be Europe. But we thought that because we're not massiver holiday-goers and I'm not keen on flying and need to ease myself into that side of things gently. Any suggestions gratefully received. Vienna is very nice.Flight time is around 3 hours, IIRC.There are plenty of museums too, if you want a bit of culture. Florence is about as culture as culture gets.
Not Southern Europe either, so doesn't get ridiculously hot. 1 for Vienna. I would also suggest Budapest for a couple of days as well. Bruges maybe.Certainly has culture, food and history.Hire bikes and cycle to the windmills on the city outskirts. Bruges might be a good shout. Suggested Vienna but she's been there before (as a child, admittedly, but wants somewhere new, which is fair enough). Looking at the geography, Florence might be too southern for me. I'm just back from Vienna and it's one of ther best and most relaxing cities I've visited. Even if she's been there before as a kid you should go. Thanks for all the suggestions, all. Thought it was only right I provided an update.
After looking at various places, including Stockholm, and Vienna as suggested, we ended up looking at Copenhagen and have now booked seven nights. The flights and hotel weren't as much as I thought they might be, so that'll make up for sundries like food and drink being a bit more.
Looking forward to it, except the flights, I hate flying. Haven't been on a proper holiday for five years (as I'm constantly reminded) so should be good. Just for next time consider Tallinn in Estonia, lovely old town and a little less well trodden.
Split in Croatia out of season would suit too.
I must go back to Copenhagen, I have relatives there.
Take a trip to Elsinorewhich isn't too far away and is home to the castle setting of Hamlet.
Sweden is just a short ferry trip away too. yes, I like copenhagen and have beenthere twice... it's quite a compact city from what I remember (been over 10 years) and we almost went there as part of our next little jaunt... data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
