Travel Insurance with Pre-existing Conditions

A family member is having difficulty arranging travel insurance due to past/pre-existing/ongoing medical conditions which have resulted in a couple of the major insurers refusing insurance. Can anyone advise/recommend something for this situation? I'm guessing a specialist broker i.e. a human, rather than online, is the way to go?

If there is an organisation that specialises in that condition, they will likely have a list of 'friendly' insurers.

Depending upon the medical condition, some airlines may not take them either. They will probably need a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) completed by the GP.

Please don't do what I witnessed at the car rental desk at Rome airport a few years back. A guy arrived with an artificial leg and eye patch to pick up his rental. 45 minutes and a very restless queue later and he left empty handed, as he had no doctors certificate or letter to state he could drive and had endorsements on his New Zealand licence he could not explain. Apparently he was already a day late, as Air NZ had refused to carry him until he could get a doctor's letter. All very stressful for him I am sure!

I suggest you try award-winning and Which magazine recommended Holidaysafe.co.uk for travel insurance with a pre-existing condition/conditions.
Their online questions are quite a bit different from the rest of the insurance websites.
You start by entering the medication you take and there are drop-down boxes to state the reason for taking them.
I've used most of the specialist insurers for pre-existing conditions over the years (for heart conditions and stomach ulcers) until I discovered Holidaysafe and have stuck with them for the last 4-5 years now.

This has been an interesting thread.I have just come across medicaltravelcompared.co.uk which you input your conditions and they do a multi insurance company search for travel policies.

I have used M and S and Direct Travel for my parents and both insured, but fingers crossed have not had to make a claim so not sure what they are like for paying out.
