Action cameras are compact and wearable but in the settings you describe I think they'd stand out.Spy type cameras do exist but the problem is that not only is the quality quite poor but they tend to suffer extreme distortion which doesn't sound like it would be suitable for your use. I enjoy street photography. My advise is to do it just as obviously as possible. Don’t be shy about it.
I still enjoy taking my Mamiya Medium format out for those kind of shots.
The moment you try to conceal what you are doing, or do it from a long distance with zoom lenses you draw attention to yourself. Doing it covertly is even worse. Last answer = best answer.
I think the reason most people get noticed is that they're *trying* to do it furtively.
I've been trying to shoot street for years with cameras which are nowhere near discreet (though admittedly not artillery piece lenses).
My limitation has been talent, not getting hassled for it data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 I tend to agree - as long as it's obvious that you aren't sticking your camera in folks faces you are likely to be ignored
