On another point I think I'm going to give Affinity Photo a try when I get back from Berlin later this week, for the money it looks ok and even if I don't like it's not the end of the world.

Anyone else tried it?

It's more along the lines of photo shop than light room. Not used it a lot but does pretty much the same as PS.

Yes as per my earlier post. It is pretty awesome.

I'm a bit late to this party, but I also ditched my PS CC subscription a few months ago as I just wasn't getting the use out of it.

Only yesterday did I discover Affinity Photo (in my case, for Mac). Straight away, I love it as a PS replacement. Faster, simpler to use and seems to do everything I need. Plenty of tutorial videos available too.
I haven't tried the RAW conversion yet, but read lots of good things about it.
For just under £49, it's a steal.

Initially I turned my back on Capture One because it was so different to LR and frankly rather intimidating. BUT... Phaseone do seem genuinely committed to online education and their webinar series of videos are excellent. Also, with every minor release you can restart your 30 day trial - perfect for running LR until it fails while building up your Capture One skills. My aim is to slowly build confidence in Capture One so I can simply switch to it and stump up for the licence when LR gives up the ghost. There's a big Mac OS update coming soon - maybe that will be the turning point.

A lot of industry people have switched to Capture One, it really has gained a lot of followers in recent couple of years. Apparently colour rendering is so much better than Adobe Camera Raw / LR which both apply some secret adjustments to RAW without your knowledge making them flat and unappealing. It has been a second time recently when I was asked if I use Capture One and commented that it would be better if I did. Sooner or later I will have no choice as more and more photographers use it and it slowely becomes the industry standard (PS is safe though).

Interesting - got any references about the "secret twiddling"?

Loads on the net IIRC. I've read a couple of articles but have none bookmarked and am on my phone now.

@shotokan101 IIRC this was one of them
