I'm happy I went for the 10.8", it's a good size screen and seems to be a lot of tablet for the money.
Just need to find a case for it now, the cat has already tried to knock it off the sofa! data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 How does it compare to the tab s10.5? I own the tab s. However, It's becoming quite slow. I mostly use my tab s for web browsing and Netflix. Is it a worthwhile upgrade? No comparison - the M5 shows it a clean pair of heels in all respects. It is fast, butter smooth, the screen is jaw-dropping, and the build quality and materials are second to none. On the screen, I wouldn't have believed that an ips screen could achieve the colour saturation and real blacks of an oled screen, which was one of the reasons I went for the Tab S 10.5 in the first place. But the M5's screen achieves these and more. Colours, even in vivid mode, appear natural with no colour bleed. The camera also faithfully replicates the real life colours of subjects. Sound and volume output are very good, with a hint of real bass, thanks to the Harmon Kardon stereo speaker system. But there is no Dolby audio present. This doesn't impair the audio when watching Dolby encoded material in any way. But purists will cluck their tongues and stroke their beards with disdain no doubt. The cameras are very good and capture a lot of detail and colour in ideal conditions. And even with that expanse of glass and metal rear cover, it never feels heavy or uncomfortable to hold.
On the minus side? The M5 is designed to be held in landscape mode, same as the Tab S, but the contras are on the right side rather than the top. So when you do use it in portrait mode, the controls are on the bottom edge.A small niggle, but nevertheless... I've read gripes in other forums where owners are complaining that the native Netflix app doesn't feature hd playback. But I can't see anything wrong in that respect. And the lack of flash either on the rear, or front selfie camera can be an issue in low lighting conditions. But then again, no one in their right mind would consider this a replacement for a real, or even phone, camera.
So that's my tuppence. Of course, I would suggest having a look at the M5 before deciding to buy. But this isn't really feasible given the lack of retailers stocking Huawei devices. You could try mobile phone stores which sell their handsets as they are more likely to have them available.
To anyone who decides to go fore one of these, I suggest buying a screen protector and case at the same time as, unlike their phones, Hauwei hasn't deemed the M5 worthy enough of a factory-fitted (film-type) protector. And that huge slab of glass is an accident waiting to happen. Ditto the rear aluminium cover. It looks sexy as hell, but it's gonna scratch easily. After 4 years of samsung phones decided to go for the Huawei p20 pro from an s7 edge.
Best decision I've made, phone is one of the best I ve owned. If the tablet is anything like the p20 pro it's a winner.
Wil be mainly using the tablet for netflix Internet browsing and ebook reader.
Thanks for getting back to me, I made a similar move by going from the S7 Edge to the Huawei P20 and I have also been really happy with the change. The P20 is a lovely handset so that helped make the decision to get the tablet. I'm also very happy with that move, it's a really nice unit and avoid upgrade on my aging iPad.
I just need to get a case and screen protector ordered before it gets damaged! I have just ordered M5 Mediapad as replacement for Galaxy s2 tab - Reveiws seem good apart from lack of headphone socket - Delivery tomorrow hopefully. I ordered a Spigen case from ebay.com for $17.99/£14.65 (Monzo payment). My sister lives in Brooklyn and she regularly gets visitors to bring back purchases for family members data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
Then I saw the official Huawei case in a mid-grey colour for sale on Amazon UK for £16.20 and bought that to use while awaiting the Spigen case. I can highly recommend the official case. It has a really nice moleskin feel, with a soft suede-like inside which is gentle on the screen. It has a 2-way split for web browsing, watching videos etc. It also came with a film screen protector
The Spigen case is black, with a faux-leather feel and a soft, microfibre-like inside. It has a 3-way split, which as well as positioning for web, videos etc, also allows it to lie at a lower angle, for keyboard use. But it doesn't appear to be available in the UK yet.
On screen protectors, due to the M5 screen having a curved edge, all the glass protectors available stop short of the edge, to varying degrees. I settled for a Brotect AirGlass protector for £12.49 from ebay It is glass but is incredibly thin and applies like a film protector. Like the others, it stops short of the edge. The protector edge is also squared, and not the preferred (for me) 2.5d curved type. But it is so thin, it is hardly noticeable.
