Unfortunately there is a real chance that the Fritzbox router won't arrive until Tuesday. Friday and Monday are Bank Holidays in Ireland and I've had mixed reports as to whether the courier is working tomorrow or not.

Because my installation has gone ahead, my old provider has ended my service so I've now got no Internet and that isn't an option with the long weekend ahead!

So as stupid as it may be, I'll buy whatever I can get in either Currys or Argos tomorrow and then sell it on ebay or the classifieds once the Fritzbox arrives.

Apparently I need a router that has VLAN tagging on WAN (this is double Dutch to me) and I'm not sure which routers have that.

Any suggestions? Sadly as I say I'm limited to whatever is available in Currys or Argos.

Personally I wouldn't mind being without fixed line internet for a few days if it meant getting a free (or discounted) half decent router such as the Fritzbox from my ISP later on. Can't you use mobile internet in the interim? Most smartphones allow you to 'tether' your mobile internet connection to laptops etc

Also I'm slightly puzzled as to why your old ISP has terminated your old DSL line (i'm assuming you had a DSL service of some sort), as copper lines (which is what DSL technology is based on) have nothing to do with fibre. I could understand it if it was the same ISP you were buying the fibre service from.

Nevertheless if you have your heart set on buying a new router ASAP, then Argos Ireland sell both the Netgear XR500 and Netgear AC2300 (R7000P) in their brick & mortar stores. If you can afford the XR500, go for that as its a R7800 but with better firmware called DumaOS - ignore the gaming features as its just marketing fluff. But the R7000P is also a great router so you won't be disappointed with either.

Wrt VLAN tagging, both the XR500 and R7000P support this, have a look here:

My old provider (which was crappy 5mb broadband through the copper line) have basically ended my contract as I now (should) have a new fibre service. So I'm basically no longer a customer of my old provider.

On the plus side, I've been in touch with the local courier today and they are doing deliveries today so I'll be getting the Fritzbox this afternoon.

I had reserved a tp-link AC1750 in Currys as I've been told by a guy who does the fibre installs in Ireland that it is compatible but fortunately I won't need to go there. It was £80 in Currys Derry (I live in Ireland but work in Northern Ireland).

Nice, the Fritzbox 7530 should perform well on a FTTP line data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Hopefully it's a very straightforward plug n play.

This is on WiFi, although right beside the box.

At the other end of the house it's still 44mbps.

I'll plug in the Xbox and Sky next to see what the wired connection gives.

Hmm, xbox is reporting just 18mbps.

Any suggestions?

Edit, just checked again and got 37mbps.
