Again. Kodi.

If you're only streaming to the TV, there are other solutions rather than Plex that won't try to transcode everything because your TV isn't compatible with the format.

Understood. I think I'm leaning towards the Nvidia Shield TV though, and keeping my existing NAS as purely a file server. I guess I could try out different solutions including Plex and Kodi.

Nvidia Shield the daddy with Kodi and an ancient QNAP 412 here, no issues, 4k HDR MKV over WIFI

You can try out Emby on the shield

Just remember Android TV is different to Android for mobile as only certain apps will be available for shield.

Also go for the cheapest shield, all sorts of reports of issues with the hard drives plus 16gb version is silent without the noise that comes with a disk and cooling.

Thank you for the tips.

For now, I have managed to give my existing NAS a new lease of life by installing the OS 6 on it using the unofficial files provided on the Netgear forum. This has allowed me to update to the latest version of Plex Media Server and restore full functionality.
