Using powerline on a second ring main? Help!
Hello AllI’m a bit of a noob with networks as I’ve only ever had my ISP provide a router very close to my AVR and ethernet based sources up to now.
But I’m moving.Currently in the new place the router is on the first floor, with powerline taking ethernet sockets into a second room upstairs.Only wifi is available downstairs, no direct ethernet connection.
However my AVR and sources will be going downstairs. My AVR (Anthem MRX710) doesn’t have wifi and needs to be plugged into an ethernet socket directly to enable its control app, and I am a bit of a believer in being wired wherever possible (even for my Chromecast and Roku that could potentially operate using wifi only, I would still prefer hard wiring them). However I understand that the downstairs is on a second ring main.
So will powerline (such as Devolo Magic 2) be able to transmit from upstairs and receive downstairs if it’s on a separate ring?Thoughts or possible alternative solutions if the answer is ‘no’ very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Yes, different ring mains are fine. Some early RCDs tend to block the signal, but I can happily connect to my neighbour's unencrypted powerline network if my broadband goes down data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
It's important that you use the Encrypt button to protect your adapters. I use the TP-Link units and they work very well. I have 1 by the router, another in the summer house and a 3rd with wifi router built in for the music room. Thank you so much for your prompt response, that’s very much appreciated and quite a relief I can tell you!
If I just used the Anthem’s remote instead of the control app, I’d wear it out in a month. I’m constantly adjusting volume between different YouTube videos or different sources, and it’s just so much easier having what is in effect an all-in-one remote on the phone for everything I need to control.
And that’s not even considering the quality over wifi vs ethernet debate.
Thanks again.
