So I need to connect to the router direct to pair them and then I could perhaps put the disc somewhere else without the ethernet and it'll still connect, but if that doesn't work I can try the powerline adaptor.
If not that, then off to ebay with it I guess! I don't think you can "pair" a single disc to use WiFi as backhaul. A single disc must be connected via ethernet to your network. Connecting via Powerline should be fine (as it's logically the same as a direct connection). Wait. So did I misunderstand what pocketmonkey said or are you disagreeing? Hmm. So the instructions tell me to use the Whole Home app to install, but when I open it on my phone it asks "which pack do you have?" with options of two disc, three disc, or multiple packs, and then says "add-on discs will need to be added later"...
Any advice on a way around that? It's a while since I set a system up, but I'd go with the two disc option. You can just exit when it asks about setting up more than the first disc. He has a BT Smart Hub 2, which can act as the "master" disc (although I think it needs a different type of additional disc). If you're using a an existing router which isn't a BT Smart Hub 2, then the first disc must be connected by ethernet to your router.
