NAS Device Recommendations - Around £150 mark

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend any NAS devices for a home network, to store a mixture of general documents, music files as well as the odd full HD films intended to be streamed to a Samsung TV?

Preferably to be accessed from home as well as other places (such as whilst at work) to access personal docs when necessary.

I'd like something with either 2 or 4 drive bays - I've got some 500GB SSD's which I'm intending on using.

Thanks.

I don't think you'll get a "good" 4-bay NAS for your budget, if you stick to 2-bay, the Synology DS218j 2 Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure is around the £150 mark (currently £152 on Amazon UK). I have one and have installed another and have been quite impressed. It has a number of very useful utility apps available, including Cloud Sync and VPN Host. It's not a high performance device, but can saturate a Gigabit network on reads. It won't do on-the-fly transcoding, but if you're careful with your video encoding that shouldn't be required.

I mentiond this in another topic I would either look at using an old pc many older office ones can be picked up cheap or look at one of the older hp microservers both will do what you want just fine and be way under your budget leaving the extra to purchase some hdd.

i wouldnt even bother looking at new nas devices at that price point they end up being really low spec or offer maybe 2 bays.
