H264 with AAC and AC3, direct play is best.

The way I understand it, is, if the movies is compatible with plex it won't need to do any transcoding.

In plex itself, you can make the movie compatible, but this takes a couple of hours.

I looked at my shield settings, but cannot find one to change to direct play.

If I play a film, & there is a problem, click on it, then settings, you can then select video quality, try lowering it.

For example, I am playing a movie, It's playing ok, it says video direct play, audio transcode reason TrueHD audio is not supported by this device. BUT, I think, if you have a receiver that plays TrueHD it would not need to transcode.

I have bought MRMC, £3? that play more audio codes, not sure which ones.
