New monitor for crisp and clear text
Im currently using a 24" DELL Wide screen TFT 2405FPWIts got to be 15 years old and cost probably close to 800 quid back then !
However time has taken its toll and its on way out, so I grabbed a fairly cheap 1080 curved Samsung 27" - whilst the size is spot on and the colours and brightness appear better the text is, for want of a better word, crap !
I cant go much bigger than 27" - 32" would certainly not fit - well actually it would but would involve me rethinking rest of my desk
It needs to be wall mountable
Does not need speakers
I dont game on PC, well I do but its things like Civ and Football Manager - the last game I purchased on PC was Divinity 2 and prior to that Divinity 1 so gaming performance is not an issue
My one issue is money - PC getting a hammering from job applications as was made redundant so I do not really want to spend much more than £200 is that In what way in the text on your current monitor poor? Is it just the larger pixel size?
If you want to retain the sizing but improve the definition you're looking at a HighDPI/Retina screen, which means 3840x2160 at 27-28". Although they start at around £250 so slightly over budget brand new.
Some programs also have compatibility issues with HiDPI screens and will appear very small, so it's worth checking those that you use most. On the dell, the text is fantastic, crisp and clear and at no point uncomfortable to look at.However the dell has developed a rather dark patch in corner
The Samsung screen I got hold of on other hand, well the text is horrible, it’s far from sharp and actually made me think my eyes where at fault. It was uncomfortable to look at.
I’m guessing that’s the benefit of the dells 1920x1200 resolution Have you adjusted the cleartype settings? If you tuned them for the old screen then they may not be great for the new one.
The larger pixels will make the pixels in text more obvious but it shouldn't be making it less sharp.
It could be something like the anti-glare coating, how much light it scatters does affect the visibility of fine details. Dell used to be known for fairly aggressive and grainy ones, but the 2405FPW may pre-date that. Yeah had a good play with clear type but the fonts where terrible.
Worse than going from say an original first gen iPad to one of the newer ones Have been to a few friends last 24 hours and checked out their monitors
All of them are 1080p monitors and on all of them the text looked awful.
Again, like I’m the Samsung I tried, it appeared blurry. However they all said looked fine, so I’m guessing it has to be just how I have got used to the 1920x1200 of my Dell
So now need to find something 27 to 28 inches of high res Does your current monitor has a glossy and highly reflective screen? The Dell ?
Not that I am aware of / that can see
This is what im using Dell 2405FPW Review - TFT Central
Have checked half a dozen different 1080p monitors now and text is terrible
