Problems booting after new CPU install
I bought a second hand CPU from eBay and installed it and it didn't even get to the POST beep. The fans just all spun for a few moments then nothing.I returned it and the sellers testing confirmed it to be OK. Another one will be sent up shortly.
Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas to help me get this CPU working?
Details of hardware below:
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77 M-PRO
CPU: i7 2700k
RAM: Uknown, 4 x 4gb sticks
The board is fine as I can put my old cpu in and it works fine.
Also, I have updated to the latest BIOS version...
Any and all help gratefully received... Most likely RAM incompatibility with the new CPU. Try booting with one stick of RAM, preferably an ASUS verified brand. Before you put the new CPU check the lands on the socket for debris/corrosion. Is RAM incompatibility quite a common issue then?
Using one stick, would I check each slot separately?
The CPU socket itself seems to be fine, as my older one is working fine in it....
thanks for your response.. It can happen, may be due to the different clock timings on the new CPU. I would checkone stick of RAM if that works You could then try with another stick until you find the bad stick. You can also test all the slots with one stick in case one slot is bad.
Let us know how you get on Reset your mobo back to defaults before installing new cpu. Clear cmos using jumpers to be extra sure rather than just in bios menu. Thanks,
Yeah, I done it off the jumpers after updating the bios to the compatible version.. I wouldn't stress anymore until the new one arrives, it's rare for a CPU to be faulty, but coming from Ebay, who knows what life they have had? I am really hoping it's a ram issue as the ram I have isn't top shelf stuff....in fact I can't remember what brand it is....as it was my first pc build and I pretty much got the cheapest...and there's no branding on it... you should know which ram you're using to know if it's compatible.
