HDD Question

I need to add a larger HDD to store all my photos, movies, music etc and currently use a portable HDD.
If i bought a powered HDD instead of a portable one can i connect to my laptop with out being plugged into the socket and transfer like my portable HDD?

Thanks.

Without plugging it into which socket?

If you're asking whether you can use a desktop/powered HDD on USB power alone then the answer is generally no, although these days you may find one that supports the higher power delivery USB extensions like USB-PD that can deliver enough juice for a larger drive (provided your laptop port also supports it!).

Sorry, should have explained better but was heading to bed!

If i connect a mains powered HDD to my laptop to only transfer files, will that work? I have no issue with it being connected to a mains power source to connect into my tv, however where i sit with my laptop i don't have a mains connection close by so the convenience factor is gone.

A powered USB drive will need power from the mains.

Just buy a portable one.
