Constant internet connection/disconnect every couple of minutes problem??

Hi

Basically the last couple of months i've been having some connection issues with my PC and virgin media internet. When i'm browsing whether its loading pages or watching videos on youtube I keep getting a white screen with 'no internet connection' or 'internet connection interrupted' or basically pages to that effect. The little internet connection icon will show a red cross through it was up to 10-20 seconds then it will disappear and I can resume.. for a few minutes and it happens again.

It's constant. So i've got a Virgin media hub with 100mb speed which is connected to the PC via ethernet cable. I've contacted Virgin and they first reset my connection from their end which didn't work and then told me to do a hard reset on my router, also didn't work. Was told clear my cache and cookies on the browser too but had no effect. My PC is an Asus with Windows 7, i've had it about ten years and it runs really well for what I use it for. I honestly don't think its an hardware issue but I could be wrong.

I've tried googling the problem but I can't seem to find a resolution and Virgin seem to think it's not an issue at their end. I tried unistalling the driver to my network adapter, restarting the computer so it auto reinstalled the up to date drivers - no change.

Any help would be great as this is doing my head in

Cheers

This is unusual with a wired connection.
If it is a software problem the only test would be to backup your data, wipe the computerand do a fresh install with windows 7 and see if the problem is cured. As your computer is 10years old it could easily be a hardware problem, the components on the motherboard could be failing. If you can borrow a laptop you could try that and see if it gives the same problem to try to rule out a problem with the router side. Initially try a new ethernet cable and plug it into a different port on the router. If no better you could buy a cheap network card and use that instead of the onboard adapter.

Do you have any other internet capable devices at home, and if so do they suffer the same problem?

If they're fine then it's an issue on that specific computer or a problem between it and the router.

Did anything change when the problem started, for example did you switch to Virgin, get a new version of their hub or install anything in or on the PC?

Also have you run a good malware and AV scan ?
