The VX1 is the 4k version of the 800 so, I guess, you can't lose. You get the same lens and chip and you can record in HD if you want.

Mics. The rule of thumb is film at a distance but record audio close up. You can use a shotgun mic but expect it to record the sound of the room as well as voice. A Lavalier mic on a cable is probably the best for the voice or a mic placed on a table/desk in front of the speaker. Both options present problems of the cable to the camera becoming a trip hazard. BUT you can always cover the cable with a tape in walking areas.
If you are recording a group (two or more) a "conference mic" can be very useful. These sit in front of the speakers and have a wide pick up area. Get one with a 3.5mm jack.

Thanks Terfyn. Just read another thread you contributed to and came to the same conclusion. Just need a mic solution and we are ready to try our first video out!

See my edited post above.

Just did a comparison between the VX1 and the 800. There is so little difference (except for the 4k) if you have the cash then the VX1 is the better option.

Never considered table top. Would something like this do? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072PR6W8P/ref=asc_df_B072PR6W8P58011894/?tag=googshopuk-21&creative=22110&creativeASIN=B072PR6W8P&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310848037917&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3436331319202227337&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006698&hvtargid=pla-350223847385&th=1&psc=1

Ahaa.. just realised that connects to the PC and not the camera

Yea. a lot of mics are USB based and will not be much use for audio to camera. I have a YETI lavalier mic with a 3.5mm jack, it is good. Also have a look at the BOYA range of mics.

Cant seem to find your Yeti one. Do you happen to have a link?

Cant thank you enough. Saved me so many hours of reading.

or just this one? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lavalier-Microphone-Smartphone-Canon-Camera/dp/B00MPDYGBE/ref=sr_1_5?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1547410540&sr=1-5&keywords=boya mic

seems to come with enough cable length as well!

Personally I like the BOYA BY-M1 mic. Not fond of Rode because of the price and there have been problems with compatibility with some Rode mics. I have the BOYA BY-WM5 wireless mic which I like very much. Not sure if the YETI mics are still available, not seen them advertised recently although I have two units.
The mic you chose will depend on your situation, location of camera, desk, chairs etc.
