Canon MV550i PC connection issues
I've a Canon MV550i which I'm hoping to edit footage using Adobe premier pro. Only problem is that my Laptop which is operating XP, aint seeing the camcorder device.Do I need a special cable other than the USB one supplied. I'm reading some articles that suggest the supplied cable will only enable stills to be shared.
My PC does have a IEEE 1394 firewire port, and the camcorder has a mini USB-b. Though aint came across a sinble cable that complies to this setup.
Desperately In need of some guidance before I loose my patiencedata:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 Welcome to the forum and the highly confusing world of video editing!
Camcorder makers should be shot for the complete lack of information supplied for editing on a PC. It is true that you can not get full quality video onto the PC via USB. This will only give webcam type quality or still images. You need a firewire cable (6 pin to 4 pin for around £8 online) to connect from the dedicated firewire port on your cam and PC. The USB port/cable are not used for video transfer at all. The port on the cam may be labelled as DV-out, ieee1394 or if a Sony could be iLink or similar (I told you it was confusingdata:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 ).
And I must say that if getting the cam connected to the PC is confusing then wait until you start to try and use Premiere. It's a great program and what I mainly use but is far from easy to get to grips with. As you are running Windows XP I suggest that at least for starters you use the free Movie Maker software that comes as part of XP. Make sure you have the free upgrade to MM2. This is about the easiest program to get started with and will do all you need to get going. Further help can be had from the very good www.papajohn.org web site that gives very erasy to follow step by instructions for MM2.
Good luck,
Mark. I'd like to jump in with a similar question - we have the same Canon camcorder, but I need to get the footage onto a Mac. I've purchased this cable (https://www.amazon.co.uk/HIGH-GRADE-FireWire-Connector-Products®/dp/B075PFP7R8/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=ilink 4 pin to firewire&qid=1567589460&s=electronics&sr=1-8&th=1), which I assume will connect to the Canon camcorder. I already own a FireWire to Lightening converter, but I just wanted to ensure that the cable I've purchased off Amazon is the correct one.
Thanks. Depending on if the adapter has a 9 pin firewire input. If it does then that should work fine, but if not you need the right firewire cable for the adapter. The 4 pin end is correct for the Canon camcorder.
Mark. Got the cable today and it doesn’t fit. After more research, I need a micro USB cable as it’s the only output from the camcorder. So I’ve ordered that today and really hoping that’ll allow me to get the footage onto my Mac. DV IN/OUT terminal = Firewire (or whatever else planet Apple chooses to call it). The issue is that the the MV550i only has mini/micro USB out, and the cable they sell is mini/micro USB to USB... so I’m guessing this won’t work.
So I’ve purchased an Easycap product that I’m hoping is going to get the job done. This has been an incredibly painful process. Aging tech is not easy to deal with. OMG. I’ve just opening your image and can’t believe I haven’t located the DV IN/OUT terminal.
Will be returning yet another set of cable! The 'i' at the end of the model number, indicates that this camcorder can accept an analogue input, so you could use it to stabilise and digitize VHS tapes as well. Remember though, that the s-video socket does not carry audio, that would have to be done via the AV socket.
