Yes, Mike, until I posted this, I had never heard it mentioned. Like you, I still can't quite understand how I get picture, although I will readily admit that I don't know exactly how an HDMI connection actually works. Problem for me is, that it's a wall-mounted set, so getting fix is not so easy. You would think that if the live connection is a problem, we would be warned about it on TV manual.

You are.
Somewhere in every manual there is the line...
“ make sure the equipment is powered off whilst making connections”
...or something very similar.

From your panasonic TV manual....
“ Basic connection
Please ensure that the unit is disconnected from the mains socket before attaching or disconnecting any cables.”

Having said that, with HDMI, audio is embedded within the video signal blanking periods, so if you are getting video then there is certainly no hot plug damage.

Much more likely is that the audio setup for that particular input is not correct for the device you are connecting to it.
Check the audio setup for HDMI 1
As it works on the other inputs, check for differences between HDMI 1 and the others.
