Xbox and LG SM90 VRR issue

Anybody else got a Nanocell SM9 series and an Xbox with similar issues?

please see slowed down clip attached of major overshoot, inverse ghosting when using VRR on any SM9X series LG. A few other guys over on Reddit with similar issues on the 9000, 9010 and 9500 and seems that one or two people here having the same issues on the Q series Samsung's with Freesync.

Present in all game modes when VRR is active. Turning off VRR resolves the issue. Reached out to LG but no response. Just trying to raise some awareness.

Check out those handrails or the ladder!

VRR off - VRR off
VRR on - VRR on
VRR on Slo-mo - VRR on slow-mo

VRR on - Xbox and LG SM90 VRR issues

Similar issues on TCL's, LG and Samsung's also.

Aggressive Overdrive in Game Mode Causing Corona (Inverse Ghosting)

Seems that overdriving pixels to keep response times down for marketing is causing inverse ghosting on all VRR LED TV's. Believe the superior OLED response time means its not an issue for them but I am unable to test.

Without the ability to adjust the overdrive this issue will affect all models.

Inverse ghosting can be a result of pushing overdrive on an LCD display too high, some PC monitors have this setting which is user adjustable, TV's do not have this setting. In this case perhaps the HDMI VRR mode engages a higher overdrive mode but LG forgot to QA check it for artifacts.

Is this issue peculiar to your TV or common to SM9 LCD TV's, that I do not know. I would post about this issue on the LG USA community site, that may at least get some traction on the issue as LG reps there can forward it to the engineering team.

When LG first launched VRR support on OLEDs it had a bunch of problems but they have since fixed those, perhaps the LCD's got overlooked.

The VRR range of LG is 40-120hz at 1080p/1440p but at 2160p/4K it is limited to 40-60Hz for HDMI 2.0 devices, very few Xbox One games actually benefit from VRR sadly even 60fps ones, your not loosing too much with it disabled though next gen it should make a bigger difference.

Hopefully LG can sort it out.

That for your response, I just want to raise some awareness. I've met a few people with the same problem but probably not as many of us as OLED people so expecting nothing from LG really.

As far as I am aware it present on all of the LCDs SM90 and above. Any of the ones with HDMI 2.1.

I've been stonewalled by LG Support who have said the do not see any issue with my video and that the ghosting is acceptable. They advised me to turn on TruMotion (interpolation ) which would put my input lag through the roof. Also, to activate VRR on the Xbox the TV needs to be in Instant Game Response mode which hilariously disables TruMotion, so their advice is impossible to implement!

The technical department have come back to us with regards to your query and have reviewed the video that was provided and have advised the following:

“There is nothing in the video that we would say is excessive motion blur. You will get motion blur on an LCD panel due to the way that the panel displays the image. This is why the tru-motion was implemented. We do recommend going through and playing around with the tru-motion settings, however one setting may not be compatible for all images”

Yeah thats a pretty lousy response on their part, try the LG community forums though and point it out in the rtings SM9 review discussion section at the bottom of their review & hopefully get them to repeat it (if they can that is best option for getting LG to notice).

If you can kick up enough stink LG may actually do something.

Xbox One X and SM90 VRR issue

I'm over there too. Pretty much every av site I can find I've listed it to try an raise awareness. Half of the guys I've spoken to hadn't even noticed the issue until I said it. Now they can't unsee it!
