Old Sony LCD TV with usb

Hi to all members. My Dad has a 10 year old Sony lcd TV with a usb port, my question is when I put some films on a flash drive in .avi format the tv displays video resolution not supported ! As it is an old tv it will only support .avi format for any film I put on his flash drive.

I did download a freeware mp4 convertor and converted around 6 films into .avi but once again his tv displays video not supported.

Any help would be most welcome

Thanks

Are you sure they were in a supported video format as well as the avi container format? MPEG2 is a good default.

And of course are they likely to be a supported resolution? DVD resolution would be the safest bet. If I remember correctly 2009 was around the start of this capability so even if it's an HDTV it's probably not safe to assume that it can play back HD video files.

Many thanks for replying,I don't think his Tv is full HD. I assumed that if I downloaded any film in any format that I could just convert the original downloaded film to .avi and it would work.

If you post the exact model of the tv set? If you wanted something with better file format support you can get a cheap android box / fire stick etc which will play more or less everything to save converting etc

Modern video encodings can be very demanding to play, so except for beefy computers they require specific hardware support for each format. And there's a good chance the chip powering a 2009 TV won't support even the most popular formats today like H.264/AVC and VP9, let alone the latest ones like HEVC.
