Nest. Never ending problems.

I’m having constant issues with Nest. It shows no usage when the heating has been on and the time to temperature is never ever right. The last few days I’ve turned the heating up and despite the nest saying it’s heating the radiators are staying cold. It seems to heat ok as per my schedule but doesn’t want to work when manually changing. Any ideas?

I’ve got an 18 month old and a pregnant wife here so if the heating isn’t working I’m going to get it!

It sounds like it’s having difficulty talking to the HeatLink. How far are they apart?

If you push the centre button on the heat link, it will kick it into manual mode.

What colours are the lights on the heat link, they usually give a good indication as to what’s happening.

Heatlink is upstairs with the cylinder, nest is in the living room downstairs.

Thanks, forgot about manual mode. I’ve just turned the heat down and when putting it up I can hear the click from the heatlink so I think they’re connecting ok. I can just see the one light on the link? That’s green.

Has it ever worked properly?

Have you had a power cut or killed the power recently?

I’ve had issues with mine, the boiler would automatically turn on at random times but the nest be unaware, saying it’s off. The issue happens when the power to the boiler/heatlink is killed (were renovating at the moment)

I'm having loads of building work done and for some reason this weekend the Nest stat lost connection with the Heat Link.

I tried restarting both and nothing. After some further reading I found out that you can do what is called a double reset of the Heat Link.

Hold the button on the Heat Link for 20seconds and it will do a full factory reset.

It all connected back up then and has been working fine since.

Worth a try?

The Nest Heat Link contains one or two electrical switches which are operated when there is a demand for heating or hot water from the Neat Stat. If you have a combi-boiler then the heating switch may be wired directly to the boiler, but in most cases you will have one or two two-port zone valves or maybe a 3-port valve operated via the Heat Link, which in turn operate the boiler. So a fault could be down to the smart controls or the plumbing/general electrical equipment that it operates, or a combination.

So when problems occur, and you need to use the Heat Link manual override to test if the heating and hot water work that way first. If they don’t then it is likely that the issue is not with the Nest system at all, but may be a faulty/sticking zone valve or actuator which you can then test directly to confirm.

If the heating and hot water are fine when manually operated then you can look more closely at issues with the Nest system.

Never assume what the problem is, always test and prove it first (or at least rule out as many causes as you can), then look for solutions. Otherwise you will end up spending lots of time getting no where and confusing yourself.

I spent months cursing my Tado system only to realise

The TADO system WASN'T configured correctly but I had to get TADO to change it (this is my #1 pet peeve and fear with TADO is that I don't have the control to change everything myself)One of my thermostatic valves had a broken motor so I had to replace itMy water pump had worn out so I had to replace that tooI'm usually ridiculously methodical with these things but the fact that there were three things wrong completely threw me and it took me a lot longer than it should have to fix it. So take your time and as @neilball says never assume.
