Many thanks @TheHighFlyingBirds, exactly what I had planned to do over the next day or so, hopefully we can all get this sorted, efforts much appreciated.

I've ordered the RCAs which will be here this evening and I've decided to swap over the system with surround sound and have the 22s out of the way of children and cats! This is the amp I have for the radius 225s which I'm hoping will be a breeze to set up! I'll post an update later and then hope to spend the evening setting up the 22s in my office where they should be!

I am losing the will to live with this. Firstly I can't get into the loft to get 2 of the speakers down because I'm too short. Hubby was 6ft 5. So I'm just using centre, left and right for now.

I have tried to not ask but 2 hours later I'm still at a loss. I've even read the manual for the ONKYO. So, I think my issue is the stupid TV.

Here is what I have:
3 speakers all plugged in properly into the Onkyo, tested with Spotify and sound great.
A TV that has a seperate box for hdmi connections and an audio optical cable that I have out into the Onkyo.
The Onkyo has picked up the connection and displays 'TV' but no sound. I've changed the setting on the TV to optical and nothing...
I have used an HDMI following the manual, into the connect port and nothing.

I have tried to connect a Sheild media player but that's not working but I can forget that for now.

I'm literally lost. So I know the speakers work, the TV works, the Onkyo works, but not together!

A last ditch attempt at this is to use the yamaha if it will work? Photos to explain the current set up. Eventually the speakers will go onto the wall

Look at the sound settings on the TV. It may come under SPDIF settings or in the main audio. You may have to select the optical option and it may also show Dolby Digital or Bitstream. Those may be the settings you need to engage.

I would forget the optical for now, and use hdmi. The hdmi goes into the samsung connect box in the port labelled ARC might be port 4. It looks like yours is in port 1. This then goes into the onkyo arc connection. You will need to enable hdmi cec on the tv which is known as anynetcec on samsungs. This should be in tv settings which you access via the home button on the remote. You then might need to change a setting in the onkyo, but I'm not familiar with them.

I like this but there is no ARC connection on the Onkyo....?

There is. In your pics you already have a hdmi lead in. Its the furthest right hdmi socket (looking from rear) that has a grey square around it.

Well I be damned its working! Oh my days, thank you so much.

I may have jumped up and down a few times and now I'm going to have a well deserved glass of wine. Thank you, thank you
