No you didn't need to register the game, but it did come with a rewards card inside for both the console & the preinstalled game.

The only thing Kirby is good for is emoticons on the internet Or however his face looks.That looks more like an owl... I just can't remember what people used for his eyes.

Don't think there were any problems with people registering Mario Kart 8 early, but the official release date is Friday anyway, so you might as well just wait 1 day (if it arrives tomorrow) before registering the stars. You can still play the game if it arrives early.
