Question Difference between Xbox live & gift cards

hi my son has asked for Xbox points for xmas and I'm confused about which type to buy, I have seen cards labelled live and also others labelled gift.

So any help on this please ?

I think they all come under the 'Live' banner these days. Some live cards are for Xbox live gold subscription, and the gift cards are credit which is used to purchase from the Xbox digital store.
