Confused!
Right, not played consoles for years and never played an Xbox. So in an act of lunacy, I've bought a second hand Xbox one S.Mate of mine has battlefield 4 on the Xbox 360.
Can I play against/with him? If so, do I need the 360 version or is the One version ok too use for that?
PC gaming is so much easier..... No is the short answer. I'd suggest your mate getting an xbox one s would be the easiest path as the xbox 360 is quite old at this point. There are cheap'ish ones going for £145 on Amazon.
Long answer
Battlefield 4 on the x360 is a different game from whats on the x1s, it only supports 24 players in comparison to the 64 on the x1s.
At the end of the life cycle on the x360 the people who were now in charge of xbox essentially threw everything out the window and started from scratch again with the xbox one series, this backfired spectacularly. Those people were then given the boot and the current management put in place who rebuilt xbox one from a software perspective and also introduced xbox 360 backwards compatibility.
Not all games are supported as it done via a per title basis as a team works on making x360 era games work on the x1, x360 battlefield 3 for example is supported but I'm afraid x360 battlefield 4 is not. If it did get supported that is how you would play against your friend on the x360.
Cross play on console is a bit messy they are all bad at it Sony/Nintendo too.
Microsoft does have a now official Xbox program that does permit cross platform multiplayer against PC and other consoles and your starting to see that with Xbox One games but the X360 is too old.
