Kodi Alpha Appears On Xbox One
Surprise! Leading media center solution Kodi has arrived on Xbox One Wow! Anybody got it to install yet? Mine just keeps refusing to install. I’ve installed it & added media from my NAS server Yeah pretty cool to see this, back in the day I hacked my OG Xbox just to use xbox media centre as it was then known. I must see if Project Mayhem skin still works for some nostalgia. Full add-on support too which is very surprising given the can of worms that can sometimes be.This alpha version does not support SMB network shares (Windows shares) that is still being worked on, it supports NFS shares (found on commercial NAS like Synology, QNAP etc) and UPnP/DLNA servers. You can use Plex too with Kodi via the Plex add-on.
It works pretty well for me so far, impressive for an alpha but still expect a bunch of issues or crashes. I have a synology NAS, how do I access it using kodi? Any ideas? Choose videos- Files- add videos and browse to your nfs share. Works for my synology server.Go to videos and add I was happy to see that 3d movies are working(at least the couple I tried) but the screen saver keeps interrupting the movie.. I'm sure they will fix that bug soon. I'm not getting any pass through audio to work, I couldn't get dolby atmos and it also seems to be locked to 1080p. I tried a 4k video and the Xbox one x crashed and I had to power it back up.. I'm still super happy to see kodi back on xbox again and hopefully with some updates I can officially retire the popcorn hour This is superb even at this early stage.(Passthrough as above not working here either).
Only watching 1080p content from a network drive but its working great with all the content I’ve tried so far. Kids are happy using it too. Some advanced features like audio-pass-through and refresh rate switching will probably take a while to implement (uwp does support 24Hz switching, no clue about audio pass-through).
Here is the official announcement on Kodi website.
If your wondering how to setup NFS on a NAS, the Kodi wiki has pictures guides for Synology, QNAP and Thecus products.
This is also a very minor thing, be aware that Synology NAS when using NFS reveal a hidden folder called @eadir that often sits at the top of every folder & sub folder, this is a Synology thing no way around it. QNAP or Asustor from personal experience have no hidden folders when using NFS.
The upside of NFS is that it's much more reliable and faster than SMB especially when it comes to waking up a NAS from idle mode, it is a good idea to manually assign an IP address to your NAS as unlike SMB NFS is IP address specific. Most routers these days can actually tag an IP to a device on the network without having to manually set an IP on the device.
