Age and gaming background comes into play too, watched some interesting teen react videos yesterday (playing Nes for the first time, duck hunt etc).
This gen has some amazing games but constant updates and unfinished games are the killer tbh. Graphics don't come into play too much for me, is prefer gameplay (super mario world, zombies, donkey Kong country) or 4K games.
I've taken a retro fit recently and hooked up my old consoles, doing an rgb mod on my SMS this week as well. It's not just nostalgia, the games are still great.

Really don't this is worst console generation, its had problems:
1. the underpowered consoles
2. the AAA games costing a lot more to make and the devs are told to play it safe with the game eg Dead rising 4 and fallout 4 come to mind. Quantum break had big budget for the live action video and it was pretty bad and so long your controller would switch off. Square-edios or what ever they are called, spent $50,000 on something called Deus ex tv for mankind dividend which not many people know about (was updates before the game was launched). No wonder this projects budgets are bloated. You have indie games which can be amazing but not a fan of the 8 bit pixel art style, it should be16 bit art style as standard as it feels a huge step back
3. Lack of demos or trials, on 360 I could play a trial of a XBLA game, thats now gone. People bang about the "glorious digital future" but screw that if I can't test a game or get a refund like on steam
4. Patches that are 5 to 10 gig
Apart from that, like any gen there is games that disappointment and the 360 was plagued by the RROD. original Ps3 had problems after a couple of years with the yellow light

personally I think 2016 was a really poor year, not sure whether that means the whole Gen is bad.
There has been nothing that I have been excited about.I liked Dark Souls and Overwatch, but DS is just another installment of a series.
The big games in terms of sales - FIFA and COD are far worse then they were before and there is little in the way of new IP that is interesting IMO.
I play PS4 but nothing on XBOX has enticed me over there (I have ALWAYS owned all consoles before this gen) and nintendo have fallen way behind.
VR is something I can't comment on and as it is adopted by far less than 1% of PS4 owners I don't think it is really a strong part of the debate.
The way gaming revenues are I don't think we will really much change until tech catches up with VR

Nah. Can't agree. Battlefield 1 - great fun.
Overwatch - best game for a long long time.
The Division was huge new IP. I got enough out of it before moving on.
Titanfall 2 was decent.
Those 4 games would fill up about 3 years of playtime for many.
That's before you mention console exclusives etc.

BF1 is nothing new it is a WW2 game reskined. It looks NOTHING like WW1
Overwatch is good, yes I said that
Division was the biggest disappointment in gaming history.I don't know a single player that thinks it worked out as hoped.Zero game from level cap onwards.Players are a rare breed now.
Titanfall is decent.
For a generation to be good it needs more than a few "decent" games.

Why does something have to be "new"? BF1 introduced a range of new things into the BF franchise. Horses. Behemoths etc. Its fun. The best BF game this generation.
The Division, player counts were close to launch numbers in December. I haven't gone back, but how many hours do you need out of a game?
You described 2016 as a "really poor year" in a thread about whether this is the worst generation ever. I've cited 4 games that easily prevent this being a "really poor year" in that context. It might be a year that didn't cater to "your tastes". But certainly there are far worse years where there was far less to write home about.

Sure, we have different opinions.I think 2016 was the drabbest year in gaming for me.You think otherwise.Personally I think rewrites of the same game every year is not exciting at all.
And as I said I am not in a position to comment on VR

The last Battlefield (main line) game was 2013. It comes out every 3 years. My point is it may be a year that didn't cater to you.
Overwatch alone, IMO lifts the year beyond many others.

I wouldn't say there's been a bad generation as there's always been something that I've enjoyed even with consoles that haven't done great.

Yep I agree. Did someone say it was a great year then proceed to list run of the mill online shooters we've seen a million times before? No wonder it's going downhill. People are too easily pleased.
For what it's worth I had some fun with the division but it's mostly a forgettable game.
