Home Vibration Trainers/Plates.
Anyone got/use one of these? They're supposed to be low impact, effective calorie burners and great time savers i.e. if you have a pre-exercise stretching routine, you can do this whilst using this device at the same time and it constitutes a work out.
The only downside I can see is that you can end up looking like a plate of wobbly jelly and it makes your voice go funny when you use it! My wife arrived home with one of these the other night. I started going to the gym just last week and used it for 10 minutes each night when I got home. Far too early to tell if it's any good, but it certainly feels like it's doing something!
The lower the speed, the more calories it burns, and the higher you go it feels more like a massage. Oh, that's interesting. I was under the impression that the FASTER the speed the more calories you burn, but you think it's the opposite?
My online research indicates that there are various movement methods: a rising and falling from side to side, a straightforward up and down and a (so called) 3D effect of side to side and forward and backwards, like a figure of eight.
I live in a flat so you can forget the up and down; I don't want my neighbours to think I am running a washing machine on the spin cycle every night. And the 3D sounds a bit too complicated for my needs, so I think I will go with a simple oscillating side to side movement.
Thanks for your input. Sorry, I'm new to exercising (for health reasons I haven't been able to be as active as I'd like for over 20yrs!) and I don't want to mislead you.
According to some online videos, they say the slower the speed, the better it is at tightening/toning muscles, and reducing the appearance of fat, whereas the faster speeds are more of a massage effect.
As I've said I've only just started and have been doing only cardio work at the gym until I feel more comfortable with what I'm doing. I then use the vibro plate when I come home. I've noticed a difference already, but still a long way to go to reach my goal of losing 1.5 stone. It's okay, Dony, the Net is a great resource for information gathering whereby you can half make some sort of informed decision about buying something blind.
I wasn't expecting a reply at all, so yours was just a bonus! And I do see posting queries as useful not just for now, but also if anyone does a topic search on here, or even a Google search in future.
1.5 stone isn't a massive amount to lose and is definitely achievable if you stick at it and give it time. Don't forget the nutrition part and drink plenty of water every day.
Good luck! Bought one!
It's this:
Vibro Slim Ultra Pro Vibration Plate Platform Power Fitness Machine - 1 Year Warranty with Arm Straps Included (Gold): Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors
I had £55 in e-credit so I'm happy with the price. The reviews on the Amazon Germany site are very positive, especially regarding its noise output.
To be honest, can't see myself using it that much at the moment as I'm happy to be active outside, but it'll be a godsend in the cold and wet of Winter. This is the one my wife got free of charge from someone she works with.

I've told her to give the woman something as it's practically new! Wow, that's a beast! (the machine, not your wife!)
I live in a smallish top floor flat with no lift, I'd never be able to get something like that up the stairs on my own, plus I just don't have the space to store it.
Admittedly, it would be nice to have something to hold onto if it's vibrating madly, but I suppose I just wouldn't use the higher speeds on mine. I wanted something compact and easy to store (currently under the sofa), so I had to sacrifice a bit of performance for convenience.
If we both get there in the end, then that's all that matters. Any claims of increased calorie burn from vibration are either false, or the increase is so small it is not worth bothering, sorry. The amount of propper studies done on vibrations is pretty poor really and although there are some benefits, they are no magic pill.
July Research Round-Up: Vibration Training Edition - Bret Contreras Fair enough.
But I don't tend to bother too much with studies, just with how I feel after using something. If I feel it's beneficial to me then great, if not I let it go.
