I read pretty much everything by Stephen King, and if you're a fan then I'd recommend the short story "1408" in Everything's Eventual. Very very spooky (shame about the film).

Don't neglect his Richard Backman output too - not necessarily "horror" but The Long Walk is superb.

Clive Barker: his early stuff was cracking - I'm a huge Weaveworld/Great & Secret Show fan. Books Of Blood is a mixed bag, some real gems in there though!

Charles Stross ; "The Laundry" series.

About a secret government agency that wages a secret war against some very Lovecraftian (explicitly Lovecraftian even) nasties.

Very much in the style of the Harry Palmer novels/films but with an occult twist. Very funny and whimsical in a typically british way but quite nasty and scary too.

That sounds rather good - I'll have to track them down!
