I agree. If there was an alternative UI that would allow nested folders or collections and to be able to sort book series in the correct read order (e.g. put the 14 books from The Wheel of Time series in the correct order) then I would certainly be rushing to jailbreak mine.
You can sort of see the front cover. If instead of selecting a book you use right arrow then you get a small image of the front cover.
Even better if you do the following
Press right arrow
Select 'Go to Location'
Select 'Cover'
Then you get a full screen front cover followed by contents, dedication, forward etc.
But I agree, as this information already exists it should appear as the first page you see.

Nigel

I found having lots of books on it also crippled the battery life as the Kindle takes an absolute age to index the text. I was having to recharge it every 2-3 days with 1,400 titles on it. I thought it was faulty at first and was going to take it back until I read about this. Now there's about 10 titles on it, the battery life is fine.
They really need to have a system to do the indexing on a PC or Mac as it'd probably only take a few minutes at most.
I do this too now. So much easier to manage.

Anything here helpful? Obviously when I have my own I can test more before randomly posting links data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

The problem with that is that you don't have to connect your Kindle to a PC to use it.Many do, and if you have a 3G one you don't even have to have a wireless internet connection. You can buy and manage books direct from the Kindle and I can't see them taking that facility away.

Thanks.I had already downloaded Calibre and had a play.
It's largely a PC management system providing much better organisation on the PC - but to be honest you can do that in windows exlplorer - just navigate the folder structure to find the book you want to read, double-click and it opens in the PC version of Kindle.
It doesn't change anything about the structure on the actual kindle though. It does allow you to pre-create collections which is a bit easier on the PC but they are still only single level collections on the Kindle device.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of Calibre is being able to change the meta data but you can only do this with books that have no DRM.So not with the books that you have bought from Amazon - that's my understanding anyway.

Nigel

Theydon, how are you getting on with it?
I am on my 3rd in 6 weeks, but touch wood, this one is working ok.
I find it infinitely easier to read on the treadmill using my kindle over a traditional book.
Coz of my issues with past Kindles, I wouldn't even JailBreak mine anyway.
Did you get the 3g version?I don't use the 3g much, but it is pretty cool.

For managing collections give
The Kindle Collection Manager. Create and edit eBook collections from your Windows™ PC a go
Its not perfect but its good
As for naming, yes its annoying that collections need the number at beginning
Spent an age renaming and running through Calibre
