Are they still restricted to 1 and 2 regardless of there being being a lane 4?I didn't know that data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

If they are doing it as a conscious act then they will always have some justification and it is amasing how many people can not accept their driving may be less than perfect.
I almost got hit by a car towing a caravan the other day as they overtook me on my bike. I happened to catch up with them several miles down the road as they were parking in their drive so stopped to ask him if he realized how close he was. Apparently it was my fault for being so far out in the road. I then asked if he realized he cut in very close and the caravan almost hit me. Apparently that was because a car was coming the other way. So there was no acceptance that he may had misjudged it and put my life in danger, it was all someone else's fault. He just could not see that he was the one who chose to pass me so closely and with another car coming the other way, so it was his chose to put my life in danger. By his logic, if I was cycling down the middle of the road on the white line and he kept driving and hit me it would be my fault and nothing to do with him!!!

Agreed. A bloke will admit he's a crap driver in the same breath as he admits he's crap in bed.

The standard of driving in this country is dreadful. No wonder our insurance premiums are so high.

When you see accidents that recently happened you wonder sometimes how the hell the car got where it did. Especially those in supposedly 30 limits where it looks like the car has been totalled.

saw a rear end accident coming out of Leeds last night, its people not paying attention.

This is what annoys me about the smart motorway system and how it doesn't work.
Going past Leeds last week. Smart motorway said use hard shoulder. But not one HGV used it. Therefore lanes 2 and 3 were full with Lorries and lane 4 due to the idiots that only overtake at 4 mph than the vehicle in its left meant the congestion didn't ease.

Iain42 Publish time 24-11-2019 23:58:29

Don't get me started on lorries in overtaking lanes... even worse than caravans and trailers!

chrisgeary Publish time 24-11-2019 23:58:29

Do you think it would it be simpler to adopt the American approach to motorways and just choose whichever lane you like and undertake/overtake as required? Is it safer? Is there a mentality that the 'fast lane' is somehow better and people want to be seen in it? Or conversely that the left lane is just for lorries and more nervous drivers don't want to be in that lane?

I'm sure there are all sorts of reasons. Middle lane hoggers used to irritate me greatly. I just let them get on with it now and anyway, it isn't my job to deal with traffic offences. Life is too short to get stressed about silly things.

Delvey Publish time 24-11-2019 23:58:29

You can actually undertake. But it depends on the traffic conditions. If I am in the left hand lane with no traffic in front and I come across a middle lane hogger, I will undertake them. There is no way I am moving across 2 lanes of traffic just to come back across

Greg Hook Publish time 24-11-2019 23:58:29

With the standard of drivers in this country that would lead to chaos.
They can't cope with which lane to drive in when there is an order.

You may be correct in that some of these morons incorrectly think the left lane is for trucks and slow moving vehicles only, so they just sit in the middle lane oblivious to all around them.

The US also have that turn right on red option, which works perfectly. Again introduced here would be a complete disaster.
