Have you had a look at the Mazda 3? My wife has had a 2007 plate for nearly 3 years now and it hasn’t been any problems at all, apart from a new back box and routine servicing. She has a 1.6 petrol.

Sounds worse then it is, a couple front springs, track rod or ball joints and rear handbrake cables, possibly pads and caliper refurb.
