Tyres - How much mileage is about right?
So I find myself in a position where I (think I) need to replace my two front tyres on an Audi A5. The middle groove is bang on legal limit with the two outer grooves being not far behind at all.Thing is, I’ve done 16k on them and I don’t drive the car hard at all (it’s a diesel after all) with most of that mileage being motorway driving. I get that there are a world of variables in terms of what’s an expected mileage of a set of tyres but according to the AA it should pretty much be in the region of 20k! Does anyone else get anything near that?
Looks like I’m off to Black Circles to drop a couple hundred quid. If the middle has worn out slightly quicker then the sides it sounds a little over inflated.
Different tyres will wear at different rates, I've gone through a set in 8k before on the rear of my old MR2 but they were Toyo's which are on the soft side. That’s what I was thinking. The last place to inflate them was an Audi garage when it had its oil change about 6-7 months ago.
Interesting to hear about the Toyos though. I’m thinking about changing to the Pirelli Cinturoto(?) over the existing Hankooks as well. A tenner less per tyre and allegedly more economic and with less rolling resistance. Our old F11 520d had runflat pirelli p7 cinturato and after 10k miles still had a minimum of 5mm.
Ps. Just checked the lease return and they had 5mm rear, 6mm front. That’s the puppies! Good to hear a positive comment on them. Strangely, BC seem to be a little confused (or so it appears).The middle option on the image is for a reinforced tyre, but i cant for the life of me figure out the difference between option one and three.There arent different variants of the same tyre model are there? I wonder if 3 is a more recent and hence better performing version of 1? Thats what I'm thinking.. to the average consumer though, how do they know what version of the Cinturato they are getting at the garage? They both have the same model (assuming the P7 is the model number) Never found dealers to be that careful. I check monthly or when the weather changes. With my own tyre pressure gauge.
Get even tyre ware and around 20k on the drive wheels.

Some tyres are listed twice with different label information. When each new 'batch' of tyres is produced they are tested and awarded their labels. Sometimes these can vary from batch to batch due to slight differences in the products used during the manufacturing process. The price can vary due to differing supplier prices.
So.. back to the topic at hand.What do you get out of a set of tyres?
