Tracker systems

Looking to put a tracker on my new car but am unfamiliar with them so trying to find which would be best.
I want one that I can track myself as well as the tracking company with motion alerts, also do I go wired or stand alone, it seems to me that standalone could be better as it would be easier to hide and no wires that could be found and traced back to the unit location.
It must be insurance approved (Thatcham).

Anyone have one or any recommendations, googling brings up loads and they all claim they are the best lol.

Hi have the latest Meta Trak VTS system. I also have the engine immobiliser fitted. The car will not stat unless I have the fob present. If the car is started in anyway without the fob you will get an alert on your mobile as well as a phone call from the tracking company. Be aware that VTS will be the new standard as of next year. To be insurance approved your tracker must be VTS. Customer support from Meta is brill too. They system is way better than Cobra or tracker themselves. You can even set it to garage mode when in for a service. Which I don't do as I wanna see what and where my car is doing when in for a service. If you want any more help give me a shout.

What's the cost per year/month after the first year?

£99 per year. Much cheaper than the others and better service.

@maxwell did you get a tracker in the end?

No, I found that one was already fitted by BMW so took over the subscription

BMW's system is ok, but a simple GPS jammer will stop it from working. Most new BMW's come with the ability to track them, with or without a subscription. It just needs activating by BMW after it's been stolen and a fee paid, which the insurance company usually pay, then pass on to the owner

Read yesterday of a guy whose car was hijacked - Brum area iirc.

Anyway, he'd unwittingly left his phone in the car, and he was able to locate his car from another device. Don't know whether it was Android or iOS, but I believe they both have a similar system.

Good news was that on contacting the police his car was recovered - with the thieves still in it - good result //static.avforums.com/styles/avf/smilies/clap.gif.

I'm now wondering about a cheapo tracker, simply by concealing (not behind metal, obviously) a working smart phone in the car, with a permanent power supply, so that its location can be found at will?

My family have Life 360 (a tracker app) on our phones for monitoring our autistic son's movements, and that could work as well.

Any thoughts?

Pretty much how the system works in new BMW's, theres a sim card integrated into the audio system. Its limited in functionality and gps tracking can be turned off in the settings menu or by ripping out the module in the boot.
Hard wiring an old phone would be a simple and cheap way of tracking your car.

But if the SIM is not used, it’ll be deactivated?
