Thanks for the replies. It seems that we have been doing this AC thing all wrong for years data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
Older cars we rarely switched it on. Newer ones we always switched it of as it tended to come on automatically.
From now on I'll be leaving it on. Thanks everyone!
Also, it looks like we will be getting our Mazda back next week data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

That's not the way I've replaced the cabin (pollen) filter on a Mazda3.
Of course there could be different types.
The ones I've done have all been similar to the Focus where you need to remove the fuse box and fuse box mounting frame to get at the filter box.
I sincerely hope that the Mazda 3 you have is that simpler version....the Focus type are a real pain to replace data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

You find being head first in the passenger footwell trying to fit your arms in and manoeuvrer the pollen filter past the various wires to fit it into its slot up by the centre console behind the glovebox tricky?! data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
Yeah it is a bit awkward!

I wonder if it's a LH drive vs RH drive thing?

It could be.
The later type Citroen Berlingo models have the access for the pollen filter (s) ...there are 2 of them...at the right hand side of the heater box...guess what is in the way?
Yes, the steering column and pedal box, an absolute nightmare to replace the filters, but on the left hand drive models, dead easy!

Hmmm.
I shall no doubt discover whether the same applies to a Honda CR-Z shortly.
I just bought one for my lad who turns 17 next week, and got all excited when I saw the mention of a/c bombs and pollen filters - so went ahead and ordered them from Amazon.
The PF is behind the glove box on a LH drive model - I wonder where I’ll find it on our RH drive beasty?! data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Well we got lucky - at first I couldn't see the hatch in the glovebox, or at least not the catches to release it - I thought I was just looking at a blanking plate. But when I went round to the drivers side, it quickly became obvious that there was no room anywhere for the cabin filter - so I went back to the glovebox to have another look, and sure enough, there were two catches in the 'ceiling' of the glovebox that I'd missed earlier.
Pulled out the old filter - doesn't look like it's been changed in 'forever'! Absolutely black - uugh!
Just waiting on Amazon delivering the replacement later today.
