Looking for DPF Regen recommendation.
I had an issue with my 2011 S-Max last month. Engine light came on. Fortunately I was trialling a device from O2 which provided wifi and diagnostics from the OBD port. It indicated particulate filter blocked.Took it in to a garage and they did a regen and has been ok for a month. Main issue is that we only ever do short journeys.
Anyway, light has come on again today - I no longer have the O2 device, but suspect it will be the same issue.
I'm looking for a recommendation for software which will enable me to do the regen myself. I'd prefer IOS software with a Bluetooth OBD adapter (Elm maybe?) or laptop software. As a last resort a stand alone device. Something that will not cost me a fortune!
Any recommendations? When I had my Jag XF, all I needed to do was take it on a blast at speed at or above 40mph, maintained for about 10-15 minutes to clear it.
It was a total PITA for me though as the warning always seemed to come on as I arrived near home when the traffic was real bad and then I had to fight my way to a dual carriageway or M-Way where I could get up to speed and keep it there. This was the only thing that spoilt my enjoyment of the XF. I tried that last time it happened, and it didn't appear to work :-(
In fact when it came on last time it was on a trip to Glasgow and I was at motorway speed and had been for a good couple of hours. The Carista one I have is diagnostic only I think... And I think that's based on an ELM device.But I suspect it may be more vehicle specific than down to the OBD device. Does your model have eolys fluid? If it is empty the car will not regenerate the DPF properly. Some Fords (as well as PSA, citroen etc) have it and it needs changing every 40k miles. Some cars need 1 litre some need 3. Euro car parts sell it for around £40 a litre but it is nasty stuff.
What mileage are you at? Some DPFs also need changing at a certain mileage. Citroen 1.6 HDi is 130k miles but obviously varies by manufacturer. (Actually if your S Max is a 1.6 diesel chances are it is PSA engine and will need the fluid topped up at some point) If you take it to the garage get them to do a duagnodiag on how much soot is in the dpf as well. Considering your short trips and age of the car it could be nearly full which will mean buying a new dpf. I don’t think it has that fluid. And I’m hoping not to take it to the garage again. Was hoping to do a forced Regen myself this time. Next step is probably a professional DPF clean. What a faff. None of this is divulged to you when you buy a car! No one told me diesel is not suitable for mainly short journeys! Same for me on a Mondeo, had a short journey to work and back (five minutes each way).
