I'm sure if you look around you'll find an injector cheaper, with you hearing the noisy injector I'd go with just fitting a new one.

Not really related to the original complain ( or is it LOL ) but oil and filter every 10K is far to infrequent especially on a very complex engine such as this . OP hope you get it sorted out . Most dealers and techs will run a mile from these .

I was DREADING the HPFP - read that when these go you need to replace the entire fuel system. But when they do go they spit metal into the entire fuel system and you will find metal in the filter. All good in there thank god! data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Will be testing the leak past the injectors at some point this week if it stays dry so if I get a bad leak on the injector I am going to get it booked in somewhere to replace the injector.

I have looked, only place I would get them cheaper is by playing eBay lottery. Maybe I get a good injector, maybe I don't.

Plenty of members around with VCDS, all you have to do is ask and if not near you pay for postage, but there are a few around the country.
These things just go sometimes, I've had one totally pack up on my on the motorway. The RAC actually had one in their van which surprised me!
And with so many people 'tuning' their cars, and looking at the black smoke overfuelng and over pressurising the fuel line I'm surprised we don't hear more of this.

I've never seen a filter after a HPFP,seen them after the low pressure pumps in the tank..

Not all the diesel is used after the high pressure pump and so some gets returned to the tank, this is why all the system can be contaminated and the filter will hold a lot of the metal particles.

Fuel returns have been on cars for decades, but never seen a filter located on the return pipe..

Why would there be a filter on the return?

Not sure what its like on others but on mine at least the main fuel filter has three lines to it, one is the main feed from the fuel tank, one is the main feed into the HPFP and the other is the return line.
Both the main line from the tank and the return line need to pass through the filter before they can feed back into the HPFP so chances are, if the HPFP died I would find metal in the filter.
