Well well, I was convinced. I was told this by my cousin who was living in hall's of residence in clifton at the time,just a mile away.
Ok, as a weak attempt at redemption, here's a similar one that I know is true because it happened to my kids.
Back when they were teens they were invited to holiday with my ex wife and partner in southern Spain and decided on a drive to Gibraltar.
Whilst waiting in the queue to cross the border/ runway an officially dressed man went down the line of cars,tapped the window and asked if they were crossing into Gibraltar. Once they obviously said yes he said "€40 please". They handed over the cash and he carried on down the line.
By the time it dawned on them they'd been had, he'd long gone.
They think he had cash from at least sixty cars.

That story had been doing the rounds for years, normally with the closest tourist attraction to the person telling the story.
