Fresh snow has quite a bit grip, unfortunately when it compacts is the problem slimmer drive wheels bite through easier205s still quite big but each to there own

Interesting, so what do people tend to run if they get winter tyres size wise? I have as @mjn said a 320d m sport, I was going to get 16" but kept reading about them going over the callipers as some of you guys have pointed out so wasnt quite sure if they fit or not.

My previous one was 18" summers, staggered sizes but 17" winter, same all round.New car is on 19" staggered so will be selling my 17" winters and probably getting 18"

I'm sure i've seen 320d with 16" alloys, so 17" steelies should be ok.

Mr winter wheels tells me 16" steels will fit 2012 onwards..... Mine was first registered Feb 2012 (FT61) so I guess that confirms they will clear the callipers??

Yes, don't see why not.

Ok cool, so next is to find out what tyre sizes I can get away with. I've seen some continental winter contact ts 850s in 205/55/16 but will need to check they fit the rim.
