Tolerable, but woefully slight comedy-drama

Episodes in the lives of two East Coast couples who are friends: Jeff Daniels and Elizabeth Perkins are the sweethearts just getting their romance started, and Don Johnson and Susan Sarandon are married (and bickering) with kids. Slight material separated into different chapters for no other reason than to cover the spotty continuity. The film looks good and has moments of wit and solid acting (particularly by Johnson, who is very focused), but all the squabbling gets tiresome fast. More romance or frivolity might have balanced out the melodrama, but the overall handling is so sloppy that the characters don't really stand a chance. ** from ****
