Tiresomely pretentious
Looked promising. Started as a strong atmospheric slow burner. But it quickly devolves in a suite of repetitive tableaux no so subtilely hinting at an underlying story of abuse. Then, when the lesson was over and I thought we're finally getting to the meat, all hell breaks loose. Any compelling material previously set gets discarded for a nonsensical tale of possession. What could have been a powerful psychological horror piece got butchered into an easy, sloppy dull mess that just wouldn't stop giving. It felt like the director so badly wanted the spectator to see how profound and complex a horror movie can be, that she forgot to make it original and engaging. Cinematography is gorgeous, set and costumes are great, acting is ok, sound design can be weird. There is an incessant distracting background noise of gas leaking through most of the movie, why? Would have benefitted from a much leaner editing process and obviously more rewrites. There is some talent there, but it desperately needs more guidance.score 3/10
