Typical Great Depression storyline
Stories about wanting to marry a rich fellow but falling for a poor one were very prevalent during the Great Depression, probably because that's what most girls dreamed about and settled for. If you want to see Carole Lombard in such a situation, check out either the drama Sinners in the Sun or the comedy Hands Across the Table. She's a lowly manicurist who catches the eye of millionaire Ralph Bellamy. He's extremely sweet and loves the breath of bold, fresh air she brings to his life, especially since he's been depressed ever since his plane crash left him in a wheelchair. As sweet, accepting, and generous as he is, he's not the love interest in this movie. Carole meets a penniless Fred MacMurray who has the same goal as her, and together they team up until one of them hooks a rich fish. That's the plan, anyway, but they start to fall in love with each other. I was rooting for Ralph Bellamy, so I was disappointed from the start. If you like Carole and Fred's comedies, you'll probably like this one. I like Jean Harlow's The Girl from Missouri far better.
