A Masterpiece of Kaiju Filmmaking!
Shunsuke Kaneko initially wasn't too keen on making a Gamera film but like any great director he made it his own in a spectacular way. Kaneko, along with Ghost in the Shell screenwriter Kazunori Ito, focused on making a monster film with a likable cast of characters that blends both human and monster stories in a complementary manner. Shinobu Nakayama delivers a fine performance as Nagamine, who, along with Ayako Fujitani's character of Kusanagi are able to explore the mythology of Gamera. Yukijiro Hotaru as Inspector Osako is also another likable character, being a regular civilian caught amid the chaos. He has a nice little arc through out the course of the trilogy.The effects by Shinji Higuchi are fantastic achievement of practical tokusatsu special effects. By using creative angles and inventive cinematography, Higuchi's work in the Gamera trilogy is some of the finest examples of kaiju filmmaking. The effort and care put into bring these monsters and their world to life is nothing short of fantastic. I love all the little details that can be seen in the miniatures, from satellite dishes, clothing, vending machines, interiors, it goes on. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is an inspired piece of kaiju cinema, and it only gets better from here!
