A Mix Of History,Romance And Drama

Anna and the King is a biographical drama loosely based on Anna and the King of Siam, the story of Anna Leonowens, who was an English schoolteacher in Siam, now Thailand, in the 19th century. It stars Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat together with Bai Ling and Tom Felton. This movie is a tale of Anna's culture clash and unexpected romance with King Mongkut, the King of Siam. It was directed by Andy Tennant.

Anna Leonowens is hired by the king of Thailand to help care for his children. The king wants the best for his children, but Anna soon discovers that he is a strong-willed but quixotic leader, and her stay in Thailand becomes a struggle for power with romantic overtones, as they decide who will have authority over the royal youngsters.

The movie is a deliberate retelling of 'The King and I' without the musical interludes. It is a slow, but ultimately rewarding period drama due to the cast's performances particularly Jodie Foster and the movie's beautiful cinematography. It remains watchable and entertaining for it is a richly satisfying mix of history, drama and romance despite its old- fashioned overtones.
