Amazing! Venus in Furs Will be Smiling (sing it with me)

At first I was apprehensive in seeing this film. I had never seen a Jess Franco film, and was expecting cheap exploitation. I was amazed at the story, it had a raw sensuality like Russ Meyer and the psychological intensity of David Lynch. I was almost reminded of the movie Siesta with Ellin Barken, which was made seventeen years later. Anyways, James Darrin is a trumpet player. On a beach he digs up his trumpet, not remembering berrying it. A beautiful topless women washes on shore and from that point on, we meet an assortment of strange characters and witness strange sexual events. Reality and Fantasy collide, making the film a lush and hallucinatory experience. The dead girl on the beach is somehow still alive, and somehow his journey starts in Istanbul and ends in Rio. Look for handsome Klaus Kinski as a sort of rich Turk aristocrat into bizarre kink. This film is beautifully shot and much too artistic to be labeled exploitation. If you enjoyed Lost Highway, Siesta or any Russ Meyer film, you'll more than likely enjoy Venus in Furs. I also Loved the theme song. Venus in Furs Will Be Smiling (Oh Yeah)

score 8/10
